Yearly, August 1 – 7 is set aside to commemorate World Breastfeeding Week.
The theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2020 is “Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet”.
The first 1,000 days of a child’s life is greatly and positively impacted upon by breastfeeding as it lays the health foundation for proper development crucial to a person’s productivity later in life.
According to WHO, “Exclusive breastfeeding” is defined as no other food or drink, not even water, except breast milk (including milk expressed or from a wet nurse) for 6 months of life, but allows the infant to receive ORS, drops and syrups (vitamins, minerals and medicines).
As a global public health recommendation, infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development and health.
As an organization, we advocate breastfeeding as it is a major determinant to an individual growth and development because of its many benefits.
